Description
This is the single-trunk tree-form version of ‘Berry White’, a Panicle Hydrangea displaying profuse, large conical flower clusters from mid-summer through fall that change colors over a long bloom season. The flowers emerge white starting in July then turning to pink. As the season progresses they turn to raspberry red and finally to a deep wine-red in fall. The sturdy stems holding the flowers are excellent for cutting and use in fresh or dried flower arrangements. Extremely cold hardy, northern gardeners in locations where temperatures drop to as low as -40F can enjoy this floriferous beauty. At 8 to 10 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide when all grown up, this small tree is a spectacular addition as a focal point specimen in sunny or partially shaded landscape borders or home foundation plantings. Also nice around patios and other outdoor sitting or living spaces.
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Berry White Single Trunk Tree Form Hydrangea is ideal for use as a specimen in small to medium size garden spaces or home foundation plantings. Two can be used to frame an entryway. In larger landscape border it is excellent in spaced groupings or rows to line a walk or drive. Also nice in large containers of 18 inches or more in diameter that can be situated on or around patios, decks or other outdoor sitting or living spaces. A fine addition to Hydrangea gardens, cut flower gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: Best as a specimen, in spaced groupings or rows at 8 feet apart or more, or use two to frame an entryway
Growing Preferences
Berry White Hydrangea is exceptionally easy to grow when planted right and in the right spot. Almost any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility will do. It takes the heat at our location here in north-central Georgia, but it also withstands even the coldest winter temperatures as far north as USDA Zone 3a where white low temperatures reach down to -40F. In zones 3 to 7a it can be grown in full sun but in 7b to 8b we suggest some filtered sun or shade during the midafternoon hours. Five hours or more of direct sunlight per day is suggested. Too much shade and plants become floppy with diminished flowering.
Note: Berry White Hydrangea is a Hydrangea paniculata species that produces its flowers from buds that are formed on “new wood” (the current season’s growth). This means you don’t want to prune them in late spring or summer when they’re preparing to bloom.
