Description
The Everlasting Hydrangea varieties are reblooming shrubs that produce abundant, long-lasting, uniquely colored flowers massed in large, snowball-shaped clusters. The flowers change colors throughout the season as they age. Because each flower cluster lasts for many months, you’ll enjoy many colors on the same shrub at once. The flowers are ideal for use in cut flower arrangements.
Everlasting ‘Revolution’ produces abundant clusters of cupped flowers with petals that are ruffled on the edges. As they age, the flowers settle into a shades of deep pink, true blue, and purple to maroon. The 6 to 8-inch flower clusters rise on strong and sturdy stems above rounded mounds of handsome green foliage.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 2-3 feet tall and wide and producing abundant flowers throughout the season, the Everlasting Revolution Hydrangea is useful as an accent, in small groupings, and as a natural hedge in home foundation plantings and landscape borders. It is also highly suitable for container culture and is ideal for use in cottage and cut flower gardens as well as pink color theme gardens.
Spacing: 2.5′ for solid hedges; 5′ or more for space between plants
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Planting Zone 5a, where this Hydrangea variety is not winter hardy outdoors, you can enjoy it in containers that can be moved indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Everlasting Hydrangeas are easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil. An acid soil will create blue flowers while an alkaline soil creates pink flowers. The plants will tolerate full sun in northern zones however appreciate some afternoon shade or filtered sun in warmer southern zones. We recommend at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day or all day lightly filtered sun for best flowering. Unlike other mophead hydrangea, you can prune the Everlasting Hydrangeas at any time of year, though we recommend a late winter pruning and a deadheading (removal of faded flowers) after its first flush of blooms have faded. Flowers may be blue or purple tinted in acid soils. Add pelletized lime to turn flowers from blue to pink.
Note: Everlasting Revolution is an everblooming Hydrangea macrophylla species that produces its flowers from buds formed on both new and old wood.
