Description
This is the single-trunk tree-form version of ‘Pinky Winky,’ a Hydrangea that produces some of the most unique and large flower clusters we’ve seen on any Hydrangea paniculata. But what makes Pinky Winky extra unique is how the flowers emerge white in summer and gradually turn light and then dark pink from the bottom up, producing the spectacular two-tone effect that folks adore. The abundant flower clusters adorn the tree from mid-summer well into fall and are excellent for cutting, so you’ll always have plenty to use to create stunning fresh or dried floral arrangements. At 8 to 12 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide, and easy to grow, the Pinky Winky Hydrangea Tree is a magnificent specimen that deserves a spot in every garden where it will grow. USDA Zones 3a-9a
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 10 to 12 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide, the Pinky Winky Hydrangea Tree is ideal as a focal point specimen, or two can be used to frame an entrance. It is also an excellent addition to mixed flowering shrub borders, as a focal point in perennial gardens, or solo or combined with other plants in large containers. It is a fine addition to Hydrangea gardens, white theme gardens, cut flower gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: Best as a specimen or two can be used to frame an entrance
Growing Preferences
Pinky Winky Hydrangea is easy to grow in average, moist, well-drained soil. It can take the heat in the South but is also exceptionally cold hardy, withstanding even the coldest winter temperatures in the North. In the South (USDA Zones 7-9), it’s best to plant in a location with some filtered sun or shade during the afternoon hours when the sun is most intense. For best blooming, give it at least 5 hours of sun a day. USDA Zones: 3a-8b (9a?) Find Your Zone >
Note: Pinky Winky is a Hydrangea paniculata species that produces flowers from buds formed on “new wood” (the current season’s growth). This means you don’t want to prune them in late spring or summer when they’re preparing to bloom.
