Description
Like its parent, ‘Pinky Winky,’ ‘Pinky Winky Prime’ Hydrangea impresses with abundant, large clusters of colorful flowers that change color shades as the season progresses from mid-summer when the flowers open well into fall. The larger and fuller panicles of Pinky Winky Prime open white, turning to pink starting at the bottom for a two-tone effect and gradually working to the top until the entire panicle is much richer magenta-pink. The flowers are excellent for cutting and stunning in a vase or floral arrangement. A superb specimen, grouping, or hedge, Pinky Winky Prime is easy to grow and will thrive even in full sun in the cooler climates of USDA Zones 3-6, preferring some filtered sun in the midafternoon in USDA Zones 7 and 8 in the hot South.
Like the original, Pinky Winky Prime hydrangea is the work of Dr. Johan Van Huylenbroeck at the ILVO breeding station in Flanders.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and equally wide, the Pinky Winky Prime Hydrangea is ideal for specimen use, in groupings, or as a colorful hedge in landscape borders. It is also an excellent accent on corners or between widely spaced windows in home foundation plantings. It is a fine addition to mixed flowering shrub borders, hydrangea gardens, perennial gardens, pink theme gardens, cut flower gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 4 to 5 feet apart for solid hedges; 11 feet or more for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Pinky Winky Prime Hydrangea is easy to grow in average, moist, well-drained soil. In the South, it’s best to plant in a location that provides some filtered sun during the afternoon when the sun is most intense. Give it at least 5 hours of direct sunlight for best blooming. Note: Pinky Winky is a Hydrangea paniculata species that produces flowers from buds formed on “new wood” (the current season’s growth). You don’t want to prune them in late spring or summer when they’re preparing to bloom.
