Description
A cold hardy selection that can be grown year round outdoors in the ground in USDA Zones 7b-11 (5F), Alocasia ‘Portora’, commonly known as the Ruffled Upright Elephant Ear, sports big and bold foliage that is sure to bring the look of the tropics to the landscape. The plant rapidly reaches 6 feet high by 5 feet wide sporting enormous, skyward reaching, glossy leaves that can be up to 3 feet in length! The arrow-shaped, ruffled, olive-green leaves stand atop dusty-purple stems adding further appeal to what is already an eye-catching plant. A virtually maintenance-free, striking tropical accent around sunny to partially shaded patios, pools and other outdoor sitting and living spaces.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 5 to 6 feet tall and 5 feet wide (smaller in containers), the Ruffled Upright Elephant Ear thrives in garden beds or containers that can be situated on sunny to partially shaded patios, decks and around other outdoor sitting and living spaces. Very nice around pools and other bodies of water. When growing in a container, we suggest a pot of at least 16 inches in diameter. It can even be grown as a houseplant if you have the space to accommodate its size. In the garden, we suggest using it as a special specimen, Where space allows groupings are fine. A fine addition to tropical or tropical-look gardens, perennial gardens and around water gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 8+ feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Ruffled Upright Elephant Ear is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil and full sun to part shade. We suggest 4 or more hours of direct sunlight per day. The more sun the larger the pant grows. It prefers a consistently moist soil. Keep an eye on plants growing in containers and provide water if you see the foliage begin to wilt. Feed in spring and again in early summer with a slow-release flower food or natural or organic plant food. As mentioned above, ‘Potora’ is a hardy selection that can be grown outdoors in the ground year round in USDA Zones 7b-11 (5F). When grown in containers outdoors it is hardy to Zone 8b, and therefore should be overwintered indoors when temperatures drop below 30. Bulbs can also be removed from the ground and stored in a cool indoor space where temperatures range from 60 to 65F.
